Eddie Van Halen, one of the American greats who excelled in Music and Songwriting but so sad, he was stolen from us by cancer. Edward Lodewijk Van Halen was his full name then, but he shortened it for simplicity.

The American Rock Band had a very popular guitarist and songwriter called Eddie Van Halen. He co-founded this band with his brother Alex Van Halen a renowned drummer and Mark Stone a bassist and David Lee Roth a great singer.

He is the G.O.A.T of Guitarist known to rock history who made a solo guitar technique called tapping very popular. This technique made it possible to play arpeggios on fretboards using two hands.

Eddie Van Halen was both a songwriter and musician.
The band which he co-started with his brother Alex in 1972, was later renamed Van Halen two years after. This later became the talked about band in Los Angeles Music. The fans were greeted by this popular band in big clubs across the city, particularly Whiskey Go-Go where the performers were regulars.

In 1976 Gene Simmons after watching the band perform so well, signed them to his own company. They recorded demos of their songs with Gene’s company. Gene also tried convincing KISS manager Bill Aucoin and Paul Stanley KISS frontman to sign them to Aucoin’s management but proved abortive. The band wasn’t so pleased with Gene who later had to let go to allow the band grows.
One year later Warner records offered them a new contract to record their songs.

Despite leaving KISS Eddie still remained in a good relationship with Gene.
In 1978 this famous band released their album which got 19 spots on Pop music Billboard. This album was regarded as a hard rock and heavy metal album. His fame grew across borders and by the 1980s Van Halen was a huge success at rock acts already.

Solo on Late Michael Jackson’s song titled Beat it was recorded by Eddie due to unavailable Pete Town shed who was his guitarist at that time. At first after meeting Michael and Quincy Jones he was unsure of what to add to the song but later ended up restructuring the song and introducing a classic solo by playing along.
Michael Jackson was very thankful to him for making additions to the song that made it a lot better.
In 1984 the band’s lead single, “Jump” became the band’s first shot at Grammy. They got lucky in 1992 and won their first Grammy for their Vocals for the album “Unlawful Carnal Knowledge” in the category of Best Hard Rock Performance.

In 2019 RIAA list for best-selling artistes ranked them 20th after recording 56 million album sales in the US. Van Halen was number 13 on Rock Mainstream chart and later ranked 7th on the best 100 hard rock list of all time.
He got inducted into the hall of fame for Rock and Roll and Eddie received accolades for his guitar duties for the band. He got awarded three patents in guitars; headstock ornamental design, a tailpiece that can be tension adjusted, and a foldable prop to support guitars in a flat position.

On April 11, 1981, he married Actress Valerie Bertinelli after they had met 8 months earlier. This union produced a son, Wolfgang and they later divorced in 2007.
One year later, he got serious with his girlfriend Jane Liszewski also an actress who doubled as his stunt woman. They got married officially in 2009. This wedding had his ex-wife Bertinelli and Son Wolfgang in attendance and was officiated by his brother Alex Van Halen an ordained minister.

He owned a home in the Coldwater Canyon neighborhood of Los Angeles called 5150 estates that were over 10000 square feet. This estate also housed his detached studio which recorded all his albums.

How Eddie Van Halen’s Life Ended

Had deep struggles with drug abuse and alcohol. He chose alcohol and smoking at the early age of 12. He began rehabilitation in 2007.

Furthermore, he had surgery for Avascular necrosis due to his acrobatic performances where he suffered damage to his hips and had to go for replacement in 1999. In 2000, he was diagnosed with lung cancer and he started chemotherapy and was later declared free. He attributed this cancer to his bad habit of holding guitar picks right inside his mouth. He threw away the fact that this may have emanated from his incessant smoking habits. According to him, his lungs were free.

In 2019, he was diagnosed with throat cancer and later succumbed to death at St. John’s Health Center in Santa Monica California on October 6, 2020. He was 65 years when this happened and had his wife, son Wolfgang, ex-wife Bertinelli and brother Alex were all present. Fans and friends paid special tributes to the performer on confirming the incident.

Doubts were all over the clouds as to the future of the Van Halen band with the demise of Eddie Van Halen their greatest of all time guitarist, Wolfgang, son to Eddie, that became part of the band in 2006 as a bassist called off every speculation that there could be a resurrection for Van Halen band after the death of his father Eddie. He said, “If there is no Eddie then there would be no Van Halen”.
