Male fertility is very important especially in this part of the world where procreation is held in high esteem and what causes male infertility can be closer than we ever imagined.

How Male Fertility Works

Different body physiology works together to achieve male fertility. The hypothalamus regulates this function by releasing Gonadotrophin 

Releasing Hormone GnRH which acts on the pituitary causing them to release Gonadotrophins like Follicle Stimulating Hormone and Luteinizing Hormone, that regulate the function of the testis. 

These gonadotropins act on the testis causing it to produce spermatozoa and testosterone.

 Matured sperm is stored in the epididymis for up to 2-4 weeks until ejaculation takes place. It gets transported through the Vas deferens and is ejected during ejaculation.

 The prostate gland contributes the fluid while the seminal vesicles contribute fructose which is the energy provider for erection and ejaculation.

 Hazards in the workplace can affect male fertility by distorting the normal functions that control male reproduction.

 Toxins that Affect Male fertility

Various toxins are known to reduce men’s chances of reproduction. They include,

1. Benzene Exposure.

 Even low levels are known to cause chromosomal abnormalities in the sperm. Benzene, a carcinogenic agent has been linked with mental retardation, congenital malformation, and infertility.

Those who work in factories that make dyes, detergents, lubricants, workers at manufacturing plants, and farmers that use pesticides are particularly at risk of benzene exposure and its hazards.

2. Bromine Vapour

Exposure to these dangerous chemicals have been associated with oligospermia (reduced sperm cells), teratozoospermia(increased abnormal cells in sperm), and asthenospermia(reduced sperm motility).

Bromine is a known cause of male infertility. This chemical is also popular with agro workers, pharmaceutical industries, insecticides, and dye manufacturers.

3. Cadmium Exposure 

is known to decrease fertility in men. Exposure to Cadmium is common in construction and manufacturing industry workers, industries that manufacture plastics, solar panels, coatings, batteries or are involved with the smelting of metals.

4. Carbon Disulphide 

affects spermiogenesis by causing oligospermia, teratospermia, asthenospermia. It is also known to cause hormonal and s*xual dysfunction.

5. Chlordecone 

causes are azoospermia, teratospermia, and asthenospermia.

6. Dibromochloropropane Exposur

causes azoospermia and testicular atrophy. Farmers who work with pesticides, soil fumigants and nematocides are particularly at risk of exposure to this chemical many of which will come down with male sterility from repeated exposure.

7. DDT Dichlorodiphenyl-trichloroethane 

has been seen in semen of infertile men.

8.  Heat. 

Excessive exposure to heat as is seen in long-distance drivers and factory workers is known to cause reduced or absent sperm cells and reduce their motility tremendously making these men infertile.

9. Lead Exposure 

affects the sperm in several ways, they have been associated with oligospermia, teratospermia, asthenospermia, and hormonal or s*xual dysfunction.

10. Mercury And Inorganic Compounds Exposure

 are known to cause absent or reduced semen, increased abnormal morphology of sperm, and hormonal problems. All these are implicated in male factor infertility.

11. Radiations Exposure. 

Especially the ionizing radiations affect the male fertility function and cause them to perform poorly in putting their partners in family way. Men who particularly work in areas where x-ray emissions are regular without adequate protection are at risk of male infertility from recurrent exposure. These ionizing radiations are also a common cause of cancer.

12. Radiations From Microwave

 are also known to reduce sperm cells and motility.

13. Acrylamide. 

This is formed during the synthesis of polyacrylamide. This polyacrylamide is commonly used for treating water, processing ore, and manufacturing of many products. 

It affects male fertility by affecting spermiogenesis and sperm motility. Exposure to women during pregnancy causes developmental defects and chromosomal abnormalities.

14. Genisten

This is a type of plant-based estrogen seen in products made of soya beans. There is limited study on this but some schools of thought believe they cause DNA damage on sperm cells.

15. Non-Phenols Exposure. 

Those who work in aquatic environment are at risk of this exposure. They are products of degradation of ethoxy non-phenols and industrial surfactants. Nonphenols exposure in adulthood and fetal life cause atrophy of testis in rodents and scientists say it can induce DNA damage in human sperm cells.

16. Dioxins Exposure 

from industries and combustion processes disrupts hormones responsible for s*xual maturation and spermiogenesis. They have also been linked with cancers of the testes.

17. Toxins From Cigarette Smoking

Especially Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons like Benzopyrene  reduces sperm quality, cause oxidative damage to sperm and are associated with childhood cancers in cases of in-utero exposures.


How these Toxins Affect Male Reproductive System

These toxic agents are able to alter and impede male reproductive functions by acting at different sites. The mechanisms of action are similar and their resultant effects are similarly leading to abnormal number of sperm cells, decreased motility, or increased number of abnormal cells. These sites includes:

1. Neuroendocrine system.

 They act by altering the hypothalamo-pituitary network that control male reproductive function thereby causing a malfunction in the chain of events that enables men to reproduce.

2.  Testes

These toxic agents alter spermatogenesis by acting directly on the testes. It also decreases testosterone production and testosterone is responsible for controlling libido in men. With less libido, men are less interested in copulation and have fewer chances at impregnating their partners.

3. Accessory Glands

They affect accessory glands leading to production of weak sperm cells lacking the necessary accompanying nutrients and fluids. This sperm cells are unable to survive and these men are not able to impregnate their partners.

4. Hormonal level

Decrease s*xual function by causing the normal male hormones production in men to reduce.


Prevention of Infertility in Men

Measures that reduce exposures to these toxins will sure reduce male infertility in our environment.


Men should observe safety protocols if exposure to these chemicals is unavoidable based on their occupation and a risk assessment measured objectively to access their level of exposure.  Stay at homes and leaves should be awarded to deserving workers to allow them time to limit exposure and recuperative measures for men deserving to prevent these deleterious effects on men’s reproductive system.

 Long-distance drivers should reduce exposure to excessive heat, avoid wearing tight-fitted underpants and have driver assistants to interchange them, and avoid heating up their system.

 Every step that alters spermatogenesis has the ability to cause male infertility. This simply means if we are able to prevent or limit exposure to some of these toxins that cause male factor infertility. We have gone a long way to preserving the man’s reproductive career.
